After Federation in 1901, authority over “currency, coinage, and legal tender” passed to the Commonwealth Government. The 1909 Coinage Act authorised two copper and four silver coins. Australia’s first silver coinage was issued in 1910. The four coins were struck at the Royal Mint, London and comprised a threepence, sixpence, shilling (12 pence) and florin (two shillings). Each coin carried the obverse portrait of King Edward VII. The King died in 1910 and no other silver coins were issued during his reign. Copper halfpenny and penny coins were not minted until 1911.
