Australia’s first nationally coordinated Census was taken on 2 April 1911. It contained 21 questions and revealed a population of 4,455,005. The 1971 Census was the first to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the official population enumeration. The Census is an important tool for determining where schools and hospitals are needed, allocating federal funding to states and territories and planning community services and facilities.
